Bleh Bleh Bleh...not impressed

Cuddly Canadian, Jun 30, 11 8:23 AM.
So, Sony isn't hurting when it comes to recovery and profit - shares are up...80 BILLION profit...yet they feel it's the best thing for them to destroy something so many of us love...nice  The Starwars COMMUNITY was never taken into consideration as far as I am concerned.

Sony faces jittery shareholders after cyber attack

Sony Corp. chief executive officer Howard Stringer credited “very loyal” PlayStation Network gamers for flocking back to the service in big numbers, as he sought Tuesday to reassure shareholders following a series of embarrassing hacker attacks.

Stringer apologized for the data breach in April, which compromised personal data from more than 100 million online gaming and entertainment accounts. Sony was subsequently criticized for lax security and acting too slowly to inform customers as it grappled with one of the largest-ever security thefts.

Mr. Stringer said at an annual shareholders meeting held at a Tokyo hotel that as many as 90 per cent of subscribers have come back since the Japanese company began restoring service last month.

“Our brand perception, you’ll be happy to know, is clearly improving again,” he told a less-than-happy crowd.

Executives faced harsh questioning from individual shareholders, who expressed frustration and anger over the hack. One man even asked for Mr. Stringer to step down. Though his suggestion generated scattered applause, it ultimately went nowhere.

Sony’s stock price has fallen 30 per cent this year, compared with a roughly 6-per-cent decline in the benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average.

The Tokyo-based company estimates the hacks will cost ¥14-billion ($173-million U.S.) in increased customer support costs, freebie packages to welcome back customers, legal fees, lower sales and measures to strengthen security.

Mr. Stringer said he believes Sony was attacked because it tried to protect its intellectual property, lending credence to widespread speculation that the moves were meant to punish the company for suing hackers like George Hotz. Known as “Geohot,” Mr. Hotz broke into the PlayStation 3 operating system and posted the steps online.

“These are our corporate assets, and there are those who don’t want us to protect them,” Mr. Stringer said.

Josh Shaul, chief technology officer at New York-based database security software maker Application Security, said Sony was “certainly initially targeted” because of their lawsuit against Mr. Hotz.

“But the reason hackers were so incredibly successful, I think 20 different times, was that Sony didn’t have adequate protection,” he said, adding that the company could have done more to protect itself before the attacks started.

“Information security is not that hard but it takes some planning,” he added.

Sony executives reiterated that the attacks have not derailed Sony’s core strategy of more deeply connecting its hardware, content and services.

“My foremost responsibility to the board and all of you is to further advance the transformation process, firmly establish Sony’s position as a global product, content and service leader in the networked digital era and ensure our continued development and growth,” Mr. Stringer said.

Sony is forecasting a return to profit for this fiscal year after logging three consecutive years of red ink. Along with the data breaches, the company has been battling production delays and sales losses after supplier factories were damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

It expects an ¥80-billion profit for the current fiscal year.

In a statement later Tuesday, Sony released executive compensation figures for the last fiscal year through March 31. Mr. Stringer received ¥345-million along with stock options worth ¥518-million. Associated Press

Regarding the Star Wars Galaxies petitions, we first want to thank everyone for taking the time to organize such an effort. As always, we appreciate your feedback, and I can assure you with 100% confidence that your feelings have been heard.

No one is more disappointed than we are to cancel Star Wars Galaxies; however, we are confident that this was the only decision possible. This was not an easy decision to make; Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts spent months deliberating, and in the end we had to make the hard choice. We are extremely proud of the ground we broke with the launch of SWG, its growth and evolution since launch, and most especially, the community.

We would ask you take this opportunity to enjoy SWG as long as possible and participate in the game ending event this December.  Thank you again for your dedication to Star Wars Galaxies and we hope your final memories are enjoyable.

May the force always be with you.

It has begun.

For those of you who have had accounts with SOE for a long time you should start closely monitoring the charges to your cards that you have used with SOE. I got hit over the weekend and it is going to make my life hell for the next month or so while I straighten this crap out... Oh, and I paid for credit monitoring so my card was killed on the first charge.

Dear Star Wars Galaxies™ Community Member,

We write to you today to inform you that on December 15, 2011, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts will end all services (MMO and Trading Card Game) for Star Wars Galaxies (SWG).  The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.

We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans.  We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we’ve received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.

In recognition of your incredible loyalty, we are extending special Fan Appreciation offers to the current SWG community. We also plan to go out with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December and hope to see you all there. The details relating to these offers and events as well as the timeline and specifics regarding the discontinuation of the service, are provided below.

Again, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our player community for making SWG one of the best online communities in gaming history.

Sincerely,

Sony Online Entertainment & LucasArts

The future of Juriest et al.

My friends in CSI,

It is with great sadness that I read the announcement of the end of SWG. I have long said that I will stop playing this game when they quit running it and I guess that day has come.

Given the fact that they are being considerate enough to let people play the final three months for free I am going to try sticking it out, but only as long as my immediate friends do. When certain members of CSI and other guild stop playing then I will. I am not going to name names because I don't want to put anyone on the spot or make anyone feel obligated to keep their sub because of me. This is a decision each player must make now. For me it is an all or nothing deal. I can't unsub one account without effecting the other two.

I am going to build up my gunboats and try to get crews every time I'm on from here on out to go wreak havoc in space from here on out. Please join me.

For those that are interested, I run a guild in DDO. DDO is a free (unless you choose to pay) to play mmo based on the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and 4.0 rules. Those that joined me during the outage in May said they liked it. The guild is on the Khyber server. It is called "Lucky Thirteen". All members of CSI that choose to play DDO are welcome in Lucky Thirteen. Centech has a toon of the same name there that is an officer. My main toon there is named Ulida. If you see someone there with a Lucky Thirteen tag they can either point you to an officer or are an officer.

For those that choose to not join us there and I don't have your IRL contact info, you will be missed. To all CSI members, thank you for a great time!
